THE AIR FLOW IN THE REGION OF A CHANGE OF CROSS SECTION IS QUASI-STATIONARY AT LOW FREQUENCIES. IN THIS CASE THE INFLUENCE OF FLOW VELOCITY ON THE REFLECTION COEFFICIENT OF THIS CHANGE IN CROSS SECTION CAN BE EXPLAINED BY THE DIFFERENTIAL FLOW RESISTANCE. THE CHANGE OF THE REFLECTION COEFFICIENT IS CALCULATED IN THE SAME MANNER AS POWELL TREATED CONTINUOUS CHANGES OF THE CROSS SECTION. WITH INCREASING FREQUENCY, THE INFLUENCE OF THE PRESSURE GRADIENT BEHIND THE CHANGE OF CROSS SECTION ON THE...

Titan, the largest moon of Saturn, is one of the most scientifically interesting locations in the Solar System. With a very cold atmosphere that is five times as dense as Earth s, and one and a half times the surface pressure, it also provides one of the most aeronautically fascinating environments known to humankind. While this may seem the ideal place to attempt atmospheric flight, many challenges await any vehicle attempting to navigate through it. In addition to these physical challenges,...

AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION WAS CONDUCTED REGARDING THE SYSTEM OF FREE VORTICES WHICH DETACH THEMSELVES FROM A RECTANGULAR WING. DURING THE TESTS THE MODEL WAS MOVED WHILE THE FLUID MEDIUM REMAINED AT REST. THIS APPROACH MADE IT POSSIBLE TO OBSERVE THE VORTICES FOR MORE THAN ONE MINUTE UNTIL THEY FINALLY DECAYED. THE FLOW WAS MADE VISIBLE WITH THE AID OF HYDROGEN BUBBLES WHICH WERE OBTAINED BY ELECTROLYSIS OF THE MEDIUM WATER BY MEANS OF A WIRE SERVING AS CATHODE.

Lagrange's equation was used to derive an equation of motion for the rolamite mechanism in the ideal tight configuration; the effects of force generation by bands at varying bending stifness, band inertia, and nonconservative forces are considered. An experimental system for investigating the dynamic response of rolamite is described. The effects of friction on the rolamite mechanism are discussed and experimentally determined values of coefficients of friction are presented.

The appreciation of the potential hazard of ionizing radiation led to the setting up of national, and later, international commissions for the defining of standards of protection for the occupationally exposed worker in the use of ionizing radiation. However, in the last twenty years, with the large scale development of nuclear energy, the need for adequate protection against ionizing radiation has become even more important. This code of practice for the use of ionizing radiations in secondary...

Discrepancies between experiment and computation for shuttle leeside flow separation, which came to light in the Columbia accident investigation, are resolved. Tests were run in the Langley Research Center 20-Inch Hypersonic CF4 Tunnel with a baseline orbiter model and two extended trailing edge models. The extended trailing edges altered the wing leeside separation lines, moving the lines toward the fuselage, proving that wing trailing edge modeling does affect the orbiter leeside flow....

The author has identified the following significant results. ERTS-1 images obviously show up some large linear features trending N 80 E or N 30 E common to both Alps and Pyrenees. One of them, the Ligurian Fault, had been previously forecast by Laubscher in an interpretation of the Alps by the plate tectonic theory, but it extends westward farthest from the Alps, cutting the Pyrenees axis. These lineaments have been interpreted as reflections of deep seated wrench faults in the surficial part...

THE REACTION IS INCOMPLETE AND YIELD IS LOW WITH NA2SO4. RESIDUAL PRODUCTS ARE LEUCITE, RB LEUCITE, AND POLLUCITE. CONVERSION WITH K2SO4 STARTS AT 700 DEG IN THE SOLID PHASE, AND A MELT PHASE FORMS ABOVE 1100 DEG, REDUCING THE LI IN THE SOLUBLE PHASE. Prototype traffic displays were designed for four different levels of intent: Position, Rate, Commanded State, and FMS (Flight Management System)-Path. The current TCAS (traffic collision avoidance systems) Display, which shows altitude rate in addition to current position and altitude, was used as a baseline and represents the lowest level of intent. This theoretical study is carried out to investigate the effect of radiation on ice crystal spectrum in the upper troposphere. First, an explicit expression is obtained for the ice crystal growth rate that takes account of radiative and kinetic effects. Second, the expression is used to quantitatively analyze how radiation broadens the ice crystal spectrum and then reveal a new precipitation mechanism in the upper troposphere and the stratosphere. Third, the radiative effect is used to explain...

The Highly Maneuverable Crew Transfer Vehicle (CTV) design study was undertaken to explore the effects of sharp leading edges on future reusable aerospace vehicles as part of NASA's Advanced Space Transportation Program (ASTP). More streamlined shapes should provide significant performance advantages during hypersonic flight by reducing the drag caused by the large bow shock present on blunt shapes. These performance improvements lead to significant increases in mission safety. Exploiting these...
